Element 1: Pray, $700,000

Pope Francis states that the Eucharist “is the heart of Christian initiation and the Church’s fountain of life.” The sacred space in which we celebrate the Eucharist and welcome others to join in worship is in need of repairs and enhancements.
• Repair the roof and HVAC problems.
• Improve and expand the bathrooms, also making them handicapped accessible.
• Create a better nursery space, and improve the kitchenette for after Mass activities.
• Enhance the lighting, flooring and painting throughout the building.

Element 2: Teach – $454,000

Over the past 60 years, Our Lady of Mount Carmel School has been a major element of our parish mission to teach and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. To maintain a first-rate learning environment, we plan to make the following enhancements and expansions:
• Repair the roof and HVAC issues.
• Improve classroom space.
• If a fair deal can be negotiated, we will acquire the two adjacent properties for parish, school and future ministry needs. If not, the funds will be used to renovate the existing athletic field.

Element 3: Serve – $400,000

Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s ministry is dedicated to pastoral care, seeking to serve others as Christ serves us through our outreach to Hispanic communities, youth, and the poor. It is important to note that Our Lady of Mount Carmel provides more help to the needy than any organization in the area, responding to 6,000 requests for emergency assistance annually. Those served will be assisted by:
• The possible acquisition or long term lease of a new facility for social ministry services. If that acquisition cannot be completed, the funds will be used to improve the current service facilities.
• The purchase of new shuttle buses to transport people to Mass, community services and parish activities.
• The replacement of the phone system to respond to parish, school and social ministry call volume in a more efficient manner.

Message from the Pastor

For more than sixty years our parish has been a living witness to Christ in Newport News through our worship, teaching, and service. The Living Our Mission campaign will provide vital resources as we joyfully continue that witness in the decades ahead.
